Based in Mosman, on Sydney‘s Lower North Shore, Downie North is a residential architecture practice founded by Catherine Downie and Daniel North. We design new houses, alterations and additions, and heritage adaptations across Sydney and in coastal and regional settings.

Our work begins with an understanding of the people who will inhabit a place and the qualities that make it distinct. The movement of light, the invitation of a garden, the character of an existing building and the changing seasons are as important to us as plan and form. We consider climate, materials and construction together, believing that environmental performance should be felt in the comfort, atmosphere and pleasure of everyday life. 

We work directly with our clients from the first conversation through construction, alongside the consultants and builders who help realise each project. We bring imagination to the possibilities, rigour to the detail and clarity to the decisions along the way. Our ambition is to make architecture that feels deeply considered yet effortless to live in, and to make the process of getting there clear and manageable.
